This Bus Was the Only Lab in the World of its Kind!

In the early 1930’s Benton C. Black started Educational Projection Service and later in the 1940’s added Amphibious Motion Picture Service. He started these businesses with a mere $50.00! Mobile Photo Service was a spin-off from the two film businesses in 1949. This business name came from what was actually a mobile photo lab inside of a retired CTA bus! That’s right, a bus converted into a mobile photo lab where black & white pictures could be processed "same-day." This bus was the only lab in the world of its kind. Together with our amphibious plane for quick delivery of films and photographs, Camp Directors did not hesitate to utilize both Educational Projection and Mobile Photo Services as they knew they were getting professional and accelerated services. However, as color photography came into the spotlight the bus was no longer of use to Mobile Photo and was scrapped.

In 1964, Benton’s son, Britton H. Black, took the reins of the business to become second owner and operator. The 60’s through the 90’s saw some interesting times for Britton -- from drastically improved film and processing techniques to the advent of digital photography. It is safe to say that Britton may be one of the most knowledgeable people of the camping industry today as he has worked closely with over 40 of the nations largest privately owned summer camps for many years. Britton has been owner/operator of this business for 42 years and is looking forward to his new role as Consultant.

Since 2003, Britton’s son, Britt, has worked his way through the ranks to become third generation Owner and Operator of Mobile Photo Service. Britt has a vast amount of experience in traditional photography from “hands-on” experience from his father; as well as digital photography experience through college courses taken at Northern Illinois University and Harrington College of Design. Today Mobile Photo Service has state-of-the-art equipment and processing capabilities using the latest in digital imaging and processing. Britt is pushing the envelope every day in terms of capability and product consistency. He is excited to use his energetic approach to accomplish picture-perfect summers!
